Look Mom I Got My License!!!

Whew! What a day. It started with our driving class. The test was cake and I got my license. I feel like I am 17 again because I am nervous about driving. It may be an island, but the driving is anything but laid back. During our class we learned there is a three car rule. I immediately assumed this referred to the proper following distance when driving. Wrong! It means that when your light turns green you need to wait because three cars are going to blow through their red light. Its no joke, I watched it happen all day long when our sponsor was taking us around today. Yikes!!! I just know I am going to mess this one up. The pace is so fast and furious!

So anyway, after our driving test our sponsor picked us up and we went everywhere. We went off base and got our cell phones, visited an off base apartment, looked at cars, and looked at our two housing offers... more on that later. I am exhausted. Let's just say the learning curve is going to be steep.

Lesson #3: Japanese consider tipping rude! To them, it is basically saying that their service was so bad you are giving them extra money to hold them until they get a new job. I am glad we got a heads up on that!

Lesson #4: I learned how to say you're welcome today. It is: doo itashimashite (pronounced doughy toshy mosh tay). Since I am hopeless at languages, our sponsor taught us to memorize: "Don't Touch My Mustache" as a way to remember how to say it. If you just blurt out "don't touch my mustache" when you mean to say you're welcome, they still understand it and you get a giggle/nod. Lesson learned!
